 Attributes and Motifs

 

 

Exotic Mosaics ... I just love focusing on these aspects of my paintings.

These rustic medallions and art glass tokens embody the rich patina and broken

colors of something that only the great master painter - Time himself, can paint.

 

 

It's complicated, but I want to merge painting and sculpture as I design for iconography of chic empire style portraits and coinage. Although I allude to Art Deco and Art Nouveau for most of the aesthetic, I'm actually incorporating several techniques and disciplines such as ...  

w  impressionism ... Impasto and  broken color. This softens my figurative work with prismatic effects of warm and cool tones.

w  expressionism ... Rich texture. Bold. Contrary to the usual airbrushed pin up, my calendar girls get the rustic texture and fragmentation of form. Because I paint from memory, I just keep hammering with layers of color until I see something that I like. I sometimes build the abstract areas to look like ancient fresco... and I hit the crusty tops with defining highlights to make some sense of it.

w  mosaic and art glass ... Crystalline Jewelry. The glint and translucent quality of glazing over chromatic forms. Impressionistic juxtaposition of harmonious colors (mosaic tiles, tesserae). These are fun to display side by side. Cleopatra mosaic is one of many exotic mosaics

w  low relief sculpture ...  Gilded medallion effect. I enjoy cropping/framing the head section of a figure out of the full size painting. Even more fun is to design and create an illusion of an antique coin. It could be any figure from my fountains of youth paintings that I want to explore by zooming in closer to focus on 3d and incidental details. These sculptural studies are for my  pin up and calendar art in which the pose is critical

w  aboriginal art ... Abstract. Mystical.  Tribal.  Cave paintings and rock art with crusted textures and X-ray art. Body painting and tattoo. The tribal torch, the art of fire dance and ancient Tiki sculpture, Islander art, Tropical Hawaiiana and Oceania are sexy motifs for my hula girls

w  mirror effect... this is obvious. Art Deco mirrors are in vogue here. I think of sexy mermaids looking out at you from an ancient oval mirror. Beware of the reflection...but then again, it could be you (if it's too risque, you will be hidden in a Discovery page for the Treasure Quest)

I chose the mosaic theme to integrate not only my work, but also works of others.

These are dynamic displays so there's always something new.
