Unveiling: Siren
An Alluring Mermaid Painting

I just love mermaids!  This nude mermaid diva is just one of many more to come with my colorful Art Deco paintings in exotic Crystal Island, where she joins other sexy mermaids and a few colorful Antediluvian characters at the Fountain of Youth.

I originally titled this "Mermaid Encounter" for its upclose and personal quality... but I chose  "Siren" instead, to focus on her as a femme fatale. Her facial expression competes with her nudity. I like the way her hair floats unpredictably, at times going wild like she is.

There's an unusual fusion of Art Deco and Art Nouveau in this piece. Because her hair is long and serpentine, it evokes Art Nouveau. Where Art Deco comes into play is in the lighting and specks of jewel tone that sparkle with mystical exoticism. In musical terms, it's jazzy.

Exotic Mermaid Art

It would be difficult to imagine me painting this diva from life. For one thing, I can't hold my breath that long...and I don't paint that fast. Not even with her charm.

Lucky for me, I brought along my magic brush to paint her alluring expression. Though I must take care not to be swayed by her singing---you know how these sassy femme fatale types can lure you in then... that's all folks. Game over.

I gave her skintone a cross between that of a human and that of neon fish scales---as one would encounter with creatures of the deep.  I also made her glow from within like some of the exotic fish that mysteriously flash luminous and translucent colors to attract their mates...or warn their enemies.

One of my favorite artists who painted similar subjects is the Pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse. His sexy mermaids combine the classic style of painting and the art of Illustration in high quality storybooks.

I also like the harmony and energy of his vibrant compositions. You can feel the heavy impasto texture
of his impressive brushwork

Another artist who inspired me is Demetre (sometimes spelled Demetri ) Chiparus. He worked in ivory and bronze (chryselephantine) to create Art Deco figurines of exotic dancers and alluring mermaids. I always look for that Art Deco lighting effect on tabletop ivory figurines! Those mermaids seem to glow from within.
