On the Beach      My personal favorites among the great artists who painted this way are the Impressionist masters, Joaquin Sorolla and Edward Potthast.

Beach paintings are fun because everything is dynamic. The figures are as animated as the background and vise versa.

Discovery        I like painting mermaids because they're...sexy! 

I also like to inhabit these destinations with mysterious creatures of the deep. And maybe find some sunken treasure!

Oriental Beauty   As yet, I haven't seen the new film "Memoirs of a Geisha"  starring Zhiang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe and Michelle Yeoh, but I saw the trailer. 

 

I did see the masterpieces of the legendary Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa ("Seven Samurai", "Throne of Blood", "Rashomon") when I studied and researched Japanese art.  Some of the samurai films feature beautiful geishas - these subjects are exotic and fun to paint!

They may not be the exact oriental counterparts of medieval knights and ladies in waiting but they are parallel in spirit and beauty. Some of my other geisha paintings resemble antique ukiyoe woodblock prints.
