Tropical Impressionist Paintings

Pina Colada

I like the work of Gauguin but my type of tropical impressionism developed from other influences. I like to paint more than the "exotic", I'm also creating a unique tropical experience with my web design. What I can most relate to with this artist is the tendency to paint more from my head, reshape and improvise and design...what some may refer to as decorative impressionism.
Two of my favorite impressionists are Edward Potthast (American) and maestro Joaquin Sorolla (Spanish). Though I studied their work obsessively, I found my own voice by painting impressionistically from my head. It's therefore ironic that my impressionist work is actually an impression
(imagination) of what I saw or remember, and whatever compositional (design) idea comes to me.The work
s of Theodore Lukits (my art mentor) always inspire me. I also like the aesthetic art of Arthur Frank Mathews for its evocative "tonalism" and decorative quality. It's a style that is associated with the Northern California branch of the California Art Club. I also studied Australian impressionism known as the Heidelberg School, (which was formed by Australian artists in reaction against the patronage of non-Australian art in favor of European impressionism at its zenith). For broken tones and powerful brushwork, I look to Russian Impressionists like Isaac Levitan and Ilya Repin. I also like Joseph W.M. Turner who pioneered impressionism, and orientalist James Whistler.Every serious artist goes through periods of development, and a great deal of what I learned comes from studying other masters. So a personal aesthetic slowly evolves over time and experimentation. While I'm here, down under, sitting on the largest island continent in the world, I'm learning and trying new things, and as I write, I'm streaming new ideas for Bravura Island to focus on the exotic tribal designs of body painting and tattoo art. Not sure how to integrate that yet with the Tiki lounge theme, exotica tropical music and aboriginal fire dancers---and other islanders. Sounds complicated, but fun!
For now, here's a few conversation pieces:
Happy Hour ... a seaside cocktail party with entertainment in Florida
On the Beach ... a mother and child frolic in the tropics
Siesta ... a lazy afternoon on the beach with a sexy babe playing guitar
