The more she advances with her geisha training, the more subtle her make up becomes (so this young and talented geisha or maiko graduated early!) and her noisy and striped kimono will be replaced by a more plain and elegant version. She will then perform and entertain with singing, dancing and entertaining for the Japanese tea ceremony.
Today, the modern geisha look is fashionable, thanks to recent books and movies like Memoirs of a Geisha ... and now you can even find them in geisha tattoos!

Japanese Art and Fashion
Geisha paintings are hard to find. This style of painting goes back to the Japanese art of woodblock prints. But there's more... the three dimensional painting of forms borrows from western art and I have seen some rare beauties with this combination.
Japonisme is a very esoteric art that I want to read more about. There's very little written about it---particularly about the geisha world. As fashion evolves , it seems to keep looking back to the "golden age" when times were authentic and different. I suppose history gives it more meaning, and it's the same way with paintings.
It's hard to imagine creating Japanese art and Japonisme without thinking about fashion design: color, silhouettes, layering and patterns. These are all elements of fashion as well as painting.
We see in the geisha wood blockprints (ukiyoe) the unique---sometimes bizarre and modernist way that the Japanese artist interprets art history and nature. It is both traditional and modern. The characteristic jet black hairstyle and the white facial make up became a trademark for both Japanese art and the geisha herself. Wild thing.
The western way of interpreting the traditional Japanese motifs adds another layer of artistry, which could easily complicate things. For the western artist looks forward into the future (and also looks back of course), and in this way, fashion has been going in cycles.
There's a lot of reinvention in art, and art in turn influences fashion. Some graphic artists may study both in design school and switch between the two out in the field. Japanese Kimonos are definitely design material in this case, and the art of Japonisme is no longer confined to painting. The modern geisha in her exquisite kimono reminds us of the unique and exotic beauty in all things Japanese.
